A group of local activists and voting rights advocates from several southern states initiated SOLVE within days of the Supreme Court’s decision in the Shelby County case in 2013. In the history of social change in this country community organizing linked with public policy advocacy has consistently been a potent and unstoppable strategy. SOLVE focuses on engaging community organizations serving marginalized, low-income, and communities of color as its base because their collective actions have proven in evaluation after evaluation to be democratically inclusive in their processes and transformational in outcomes when directed at root causes.
A steering committee of individuals from participating organizations holds primary responsibility for coordinating activities and planning events associated with SOLVE. SOLVE utilizes a multifaceted strategy which combines direct legal challenges to restrictive voting laws, educational and capacity building initiatives with community organizations, and targeted GOTV initiatives. Currently SOLVE is comprised of over 50 organizations including members representing colleges & universities, and over 100 affiliates involved in voting rights efforts mainly throughout the South.
"SOLVE members believe voting rights can be protected if community organizations across the South are provided sufficient resources, space for the exchange of knowledge between themselves and with outside experts, and a connecting network with the capacity to nurture regional and state strategies."
